Burgess Hill Town Council Leader Richard Cherry Quits His Seat

28th March 2024 | By Peter Chapman

Liberal Democrat Councillors Richard and Christine Cherry have sensationally quit their seats on Burgess Hill Town Council, triggering by-elections for St Johns Ward and St Andrews Ward on May 2nd 2024.

The couple were both elected back to the Town Council in May 2023 as Liberal Democrats, having both quit the Conservative party after they lost their seats at the 2019 local elections.

Curiously, Richard has kept his role on West Sussex County Council while Christine has remained on Mid Sussex District Council. 'Personal reasons' have been sighted for why they chose to depart Burgess Hill Town Council so suddenly.

The Town Council is made up of 20 councillors. Following the resignation of the Cherrys, the political composition of the council is now 14 Liberal Democrats. 3 Greens and 1 Conservative.

Nominations are now open for the two by-elections which will take place on the same date as the Sussex Police Crime Comissioner Election on Thursday 2nd May.

Candidate nomination forms can be downloaded from the Mid Sussex District Council website and must be submitted by Friday 5th April.

Farewell to Burgess Hill Town Council leader Richard Cherry.
