Burgess Hill Community Sign Giant Birthday Card For The NHS' 70th Birthday

18th July 2018 | By Peter Chapman

Burgess Hill residents had the chance to write messages of thanks in a big Birthday Card last Saturday (July 7th) to mark the 70th anniversary of the National Heath Service.

Members of the Burgess Hill Labour Party collected over 200 messages in the giant card which they then delivered in person to the staff at the Princess Royal hospital in Haywards Heath later in the week.

Carol and David Andrews with the giant Birthday Card for the NHS

Labour Party Chairman David Andrews said:
We decided to have a card signed by the public to say thank you to the NHS for seventy years of service. We did it in the town centre and we were absolutely amazed with the number of people who came to queue up in order to sign it. Well over 200 people signed the card in under two hours.

We were really humbled by the affection and enthusisam that the people had for the NHS and how proud we are for this great socialist achivement in setting it up.

David's wife Carol Andrews added:
It's a very personal card coming from Burgess Hill people straight to the hospital. It contains very special deep feelings as we told people that it was going to be presented to the Princess Royal Hospital.

The messages ranged for general congratulations, to thanking staff in the maternity ward and appreciation for the hospital looking after other family members following big operations.

Did you sign the card? Is it important that we keep the NHS away from being completely privatised?
