Big Town Council Meeting To Discuss Fallout From Community Venue Vote

19th March 2018 | By Peter Chapman

A public meeting of Burgess Hill Town Council is taking place this evening (Monday 19th March) at 7pm with the fallout from the public venue vote sure to dominate the proceedings.

It was a week ago at the same venue where council leader Pru Moore announced the result of a six week public consulation which saw the public reject the proposal to take out a loan worth £9.6 million over 50 years to fund a new performance and community venue.

Crucially however, two thirds of respondents did vote positively to the question of do we want a new performance and community venue. Such support means that the councillors should be looking for other ways to fund a new venue. Also, Mid Sussex District Council will now have to consider releasing money from future housing developments through the Community Infrastructure Levy to pay for such a venue, regardless of MSDC's own feelings that Burgess Hill doesn't need one.

Ask A Question
At the start of the meeting there is a 15 minute period where members of the public are welcome to put questions to the councillors. If you're unhappy with how the result was reached, the consulation process, or if you seek to ask the council what they plan to do next, then get along this evening.

Entry to the council chamber is via the big wooden door to the right of the Help Point on Church Walk.

Agenda
The agenda for tonight's agenda can be downloaded here:

Interestingly, an item on the agenda includes granting the Cyprus Hall Association with a new 10 year lease (with a 5 year review) An agreement had been delayed pending the outcome of the public consultation for a proposed community venue which would have incorporated Cyprus Hall. With the result now known, the council see no reason not to grant a new lease to the Association after the public rejected the proposal for a new venue.

Does this suggest that the town council have no immediate plan B to deliver a new community & performing arts venue?

We'll know more tonight from 7pm. See you there..... unless public apathy means that it'll be just BHU and friend(s) as per usual in the public seating area.

Spread the word! There's a BIG council meeting tonight at 7pm

Will you be coming to the meeting tonight to see what the council have to say for themselves?
