News has broken that Age UK's Cherry Tree Activity Cente on Fairfield Road, Burgess Hill will close in March 2018 as the lease will not be renewed.

We don't yet know if the service will be reprovided elsewhere in the local area.

Attempts have been made to talk with Age Uk West Sussex, but no one was available to speak on the phone. An email has been sent to their business & development manager, seeking a statement along with a request to answer some pertinent questions.

A spokesman from Mid Sussex District Council revealed that the council own the building, and that Age UK West Sussex (their tennants) informed them that they'll be surrendering their lease in 6 months time. Future plans for the site are up for discussion.

Last year, Age UK's Redwood Centre at Clair Hall on Perrymount Road in Haywards Heath was closed. The service was reprovided in its own pupose-built building on Butlers Green Road next to the Harvester.

The Cherry Tree Centre in Burgess Hill opens 4 days a week and runs a varied timetable of actrivities, featuring Crafts; Short Mat Bowls; Tai Chi; Cross Stitch; Quizes; Flower Arranging, Bingo and more.

Two course home-cooked meals are available, as well as cakes, snacks and drinks from their cafe.

The public are understandably very upset on hearing the news. With an ever-aging population, such facilties will be in bigger demand over the next decade.

We will update on any news as to the future provision of Age UK West Sussex's service in Burgess Hill when we get it
