 Burgess Hill Scoops Annual Fairtrade Campaign Award

Burgess Hill Fairtrade Town were presented with the Best Media Award at the annual Fairtrade Campaign Awards which took place at the Fairtrade Foundation’s national supporter conference in London on Saturday 17th October. The group was recognised for their commitment to raising awareness about the values of Fairtrade in the media during Fairtrade Fortnight 2015, a highlighted campaign for the grassroots movement in the UK.
The Best Media award is given to a town that has implemented and delivered an outstanding media campaign in support of Fairtrade Fortnight across broadcast, print and digital media channels. Burgess Hill’s campaign included a themed radio ad which was played on Bright FM for a week, a town wide Fairtrade brochure, wide press coverage and an online takeover of various Sussex newspapers, Over 50,000 people were reached with the media campaign.
On receiving the award from the Fairtrade Foundation’s CEO, Michael Gidney , Robert Eggleston, Chair of Burgess Hill Fairtrade Town group, said:
“This is the second national award that Burgess Hill Fairtrade has won in the last 6 years and is a real testimony to the effort that Burgess Hill’s Fairtrade team puts in to support the cause of Fairtrade. A highlight of our campaigning effort is the annual Burgess Hill Fairtrade Festival and I am delighted to say that it will be staged against next year from Friday 22nd April to Saturday 30th April”.
 Adam Gardner, Communities Campaigns Manager at the Fairtrade Foundation, said:
"Burgess Hill Fairtrade Town made a fantastic commitment to farmers and workers around the globe who are continuously working hard to bring us the products we love. All too often these communities are not receiving a fair price for their work, but towns like Burgess Hill have shown their dedication to this cause. It’s so important for communities to get involved and let their voice be heard.
“Thanks to the ongoing support of campaigners and businesses around the UK, Fairtrade today reaches millions of vulnerable farmers and workers in around 70 countries. We are constantly inspired and surprised by the overwhelming support the British public shows Fairtrade. Thank you and congratulations to Burgess Fairtrade Town for engaging with the media and driving change for farming communities in developing countries.”
The UK has one of the most powerful networks of Fairtrade campaigners in the world, including over 600 Fairtrade Towns, 1350 Fairtrade Schools and 170 Fairtrade Universities, and 7,500 Fairtrade places of worship.
