martlets shopping centrelMartlets Shopping Centre Owners Fail To Submit Planning Application For Proposed New Development

13th January 2015

Back in October, at the public exhibition of their plans for a total revamp of the Martlets Shopping Centre, owners NewRiver Retail said that they'd be submitting a planning application to Mid Sussex District Council by the end of the year (2014)

BHU readers won't be surprised to learn that this planning application has failed to materialise. We're very used to delays of a project that some think will never see the light of day.

As for when an application may be submitted, well your guess is as good as ours. Going by NewRiver's track record, it could be years, not months, and if it does finally arrive, will probably be nothing like their current proposals!

The wait (since 2010) continues.....

As a reminder, here's what NewRiver Retail have drawn up:

  • Lidl will be knocked down and relocated to the rear of Queens Crescent Car Park
  • Argos will be relocated to the left of NewLook
  • The Marlets Hall & Library will be knocked down
  • A new library will be constructed over two floors nearer to the roadside of Civic Way
  • Above the library will be a Travelodge hotel, more shops and housing.
  • The multistorey car park will be turned into a tall block of housing with an underground car park for residents
  • A convenience store (such as Sainsbury Local) will go in the place of Lidl, smaller in size, with a different orientation
  • Shop units from Cafe Nazaar,Sussex Appliances all the way round to Truffles will be knocked down and reconfigured into a handful of larger retail units
  • William Hill Interiors, Pulse, Iceland, Boomerang and all other units in that area will be demolished and resized to house larger retailers
  • Only selected businesses will have a place in the reconfigured units
  • The Martlets Heights building will be knocked down, seeing the departure of Heights Health Club, Apollo Lasertag and all the offices.
  • In it's place will be shops with an 8 screen multiplex cinema above.
