St Andrews Ward

Dear Burgess Hill Uncovered,

Since you reported the developer of the Keymer Tile Works in St. Andrews Ward ripped out trees backing on to existing properties, some residents are now experiencing subsidence. To add insult to injury, the developer has blocked off access to the back of residents’ properties, used to maintain them.

Residents’ were told at a recent meeting with the developer that their concerns had been noted. Councillors did not attend this meeting. At a previous site visit around the perimeter of the Works, Councillors Norman Webster and Pru Moore gave assurances they would investigate concerns over road access and safety. Residents are still waiting for answers. Ward Councillors were again conspicuous by their absence.

The old phrase “shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted” springs to mind. Elected representatives should be judged on results. Councillors have promised much and delivered little. This has to change. I have been very vocal in telling the developer they have breached the law and they cannot ignore the mess they and the Councils have created.

The Keymer Tiles and town centre plans need to be scrapped if we are to not repeat the mistakes of the past. In their place needs to be amenities, and the preservation of key assets like the cinema and Martlets Hall with retail units that are affordable for local businesses, instead of enlarging them just so the developer and Council can increase their profit.

My colleagues and I in UKIP are committed to helping bring about this change but we can only do so by breaking the stranglehold that the Conservatives have in the Councils through the support of local people on May 7.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Kinning
