Burgess Hill Cricket Club Challenge For The Title On The Final Weekend Of The Season

1st September 2018 | By Peter Chapman

Burgess Hill Cricket Club could find themselves as the winners of Division 3 East This evening if they can better the result of league leaders Portslade CC on the final weekend of the season.

The team have found themselves back in contention for the title after being awarded a win in a game they'd originally lost against Hastings & St Leonards Priory CC's 2nd XI back on August 11. The visiting side were later found to have fielded some ineligible players.

The adjustment of points sees the team trailing Portslade CC by just three points going into the final round of games.

For Hill to win the league they need to better the result of Portslade or achieve 4 more bonus points than their rivals if they both end up with the same result.

Matt Charman from Burgess Hill CC has kindly provided the permutations with regards to possible bonus points for this afternoon.

If Portslade win toss:

1.       If they bat first and get 200 runs, then bowl out Seaford, they would get 30 points.  Burgess Hill will need them to get no more than 179 runs, as if they win with that total, they would only get 26 points.

2.       If they bowl first, Burgess Hill would need them to not take more than 7 wickets.  A win would get them 26 points.

If Portslade lose toss:

1.       If Portslade bat first, Burgess Hill would need Seaford to win – as Portslade would get 30 points for the win whatever the scores.

2.       If Seaford bat first, Burgess Hill would need Seaford to not lose more than 7 wickets. It means a Portslade victory would only achieve 26 points. If Portslade were to take 8/9/10 wickets, they would get 28-30 points and have enough.

The final round of fixtures sees Burgess Hill travel to sixth placed Brighton and Hove CC 2nd XI while Portslade also face an away match against fifth placed Seaford CC.

Ian Simspon (left) and Dan Strange are happy with their resepctive performances two weeks ago in Eastbourne.

A good few wins in recent weeks have helped the team keep pace with Portslade which included a 156 run win over Eastbourne CC 2nd XI two weeks ago in which Ian Simpson hit an unbeaten century and bowler Dan Strange took 7 for 28 from his nine overs to set a new club record for wickets taken in a season (58).

Then last weekend, Strange took another 7 wickets to increase the record to 65 wickets as Hill bowled out basement club Bexhill CC 2nd XI for just 50 runs in 14.3 overs to win by 251 runs. Burgess Hill had earlier posted 301 for 3 in their innings with an unbeaten 115 for Tom Trowbridge.

We have our fingers firmly crossed here at the BHU offices that things work out for the team today!
