Burgess Hill Weekly News Round-Up
April 22nd 2006 - April 28th 2006
By The Informant

With regular writer Neil Saunders on hiatus, the Informant finally makes his return to BHU with the pick of Burgess Hill news as reported by the local media.

Mugged For His Phone
The Mid Sussex times has a story about 22 year old Phillip Locke, who was mugged for his mobile phone on Leylands Road having just walked a girl home following an evening out. Phillip suffered a split lip as his attacker decided to inflict some physical damage before making off with his phone. Those that know Phillip would have been shocked to have read the story, what on earth was he doing with a girl!
Phil is quoted as saying, "You do hear of people being mugged for mobile phones, but you don't expect it to happen like that when you are walking home."
I'd love to know how Phil thought muggers operate. In very public places, during daylight hours, displaying exemplary manners?

In all seriousness, being mugged is no fun; your author has been victim of an attempted mugging at the hands of one of the Smith clan and an assailant. Fortunately, an intelligent diversion tactic, and being no more than 100 yards from your own front door always helps.

'Jolly up' in St Johns Park
We discovered this week that police seized a large amount of beer, wine, and spirits from a large group of school children aged 14-16 in St Johns Park. Community support officers poured the alcohol down the drain.
Stories like this leave me hugely disappointed. Is it the children? Those supplying alcohol to minors? Oh no, it's the police! what on earth are they thinking, pouring away perfectly good alcohol? With the world cup and the barbeque season just around the corner, some free alcohol would've been just the ticket!

Burial Ground Closed To Drivers
Anti-social behaviour by 'yobs' has caused the closure of the Burgess Hill burial ground to drivers. Our wonderful town councillors made this decision.
Now, for those that may not know the location of the Burial ground, it's in a very isolated area off Jane Murray Way. With no parking available close by, it seems that no one will be visiting the burial ground any time soon. Congratulations town councillors, your intelligence is without question. What better than to punish the genuine mourners.

Burgess Hill Into The Future
Thornfield managing director Mike Capocci is promising an improved consultation during the second stage of planning for the town. He says that no planning applications will be submitted until he has the support of the whole community.
He'll be waiting a rather long time for that then.
