MIDDY

Town Plans
On the front page of the Middy are some of the buildings threatened with demolition by the town planners. Burgess Hill is set to have built a "much-needed new station." Why? What's wrong with the station? It serves its purpose. Reading the map on the inside page, we can see that supposed improvements include putting a main road through Church Walk, and turning Station Road into a cul-de-sac.

So what improvements apart from traffic chaos are we promised? Well there is to be a new civic centre, food store and library near to where Waitrose is. Excuse me, but I thought we had that already. Then there is a "French-style tree lined boulevard" at Queen Elizabeth Avenue. By French-style I suppose they must mean people will be pissing against the trees after staggering away drunk from the "continental style cafe culture."

Orion Cinema
Two people let rip at the council against their proposals in the letters page. Paul Barnett wants to know what is wrong with our intimate little cinema that it has to be demolished. I agree. If you want a multiplex go to the Marina. I heard praise from a resident of Haywards Heath about our cinema. She goes to the senior movie day. So popular is the attraction that the cinema turns people away. Can you imagine a multiplex having a special showing for OAPs with raffle thrown in?

MSDC leader's foolish decision?
V. Thomas of Haywards Heath says that MSDC leader, Christine Field, admits that her decision of merging the Princess Royal and Royal Sussex hospitals was foolish but refused to take responsibility; as she will again when the best bits from our local towns are destroyed. This is the Christine Field who received an 100% pay increase from the council in the last year.

If you want to know how seriously the council will take opinions for their proposals then just look at the news about the Small Scale Housing Development review. There were more than 2000 objections to the proposals. So what happens? "Despite the shoal of objections to Mid Sussex Council, councillors trying to meet the demands to provide space for homes are pressing forward with their list of preferred sites."

LEADER

Kiddie Porn
Well I certainly would have been disappointed, what with all the fuss in the papers, if we didn't have our very own paedophile working with children. And we have! His name is Keith Hudson, and he runs the Haywards Heath Learning Centre. He is a "self-confessed naturist" - I'm sure people have other names for him as well - who was convicted of possessing child porn back in 1998. According to the Leader, the Department of Education supported his right to teach "after hearing medical evidence that while his feelings towards young boys were 'inappropriate', he had 'no interest in girls.'" Well, that makes it alright then!

Council Tax
Mr Reilly of Burgess Hill has refused to pay the inflation-busting part of his council tax. The council is sending in the bailiffs. Of course, deputy prime minister, John Prescott, hasn't paid any of his council tax on one of his multiple houses for seven years. I bet he won't get a visit.

Award for stating the bloody obvious
Headline of the week came from the Leader with: "Suicide woman, 53, had history of mental illness." No, you don't say!

CITIZEN

Hold the front page award
One of the lead stories in the Citizen was from when "A youngster from Burgess Hill had his first brush with celebrity when he joined Chris Evans for a Christmas Eve extravaganza on BBC Radio 2." Christmas Eve! Wow! Then, inside, we learn that you can still purchase the fundraising calendar of Ashenground Community Centre. It says that Ashenground is staging a fundraising concert on February 26. If you really must go, I would check that it is in 2006 first.
